About the Initiative
Shyrshaly (from Kazakh: “Spruce Forest”) is a large-scale environmental initiative launched by the Shymbulak Mountain Resort in partnership with the Ile-Alatau State National Nature Park. The project aims to preserve and restore the Tien Shan spruce forests in the Small Almaty Gorge (SAG).

In its first phase, trees are being planted on the resort grounds – specifically in areas where slope reinforcement is needed to prevent soil erosion and avalanches. In future phases, the initiative will expand to other vulnerable areas of the gorge, including regions severely affected by the 2011 windstorm.
What We Do:
  • Plant thousands of Tian Shan fir trees adapted to local conditions
  • Reinforce soil and slopes to reduce the risks of landslides and erosion
  • Protect soil cover and water resources
  • Engage local communities, volunteers, and experts
  • Collaborate closely with scientists
